Fine 1948 Swiss Army Enigma Cipher Machine codename: 'NEMA'
At the end of WWII, Switzerland began making a very small number of an
improved version of the German Enigma Cipher Machine to use in its military
communications. These Swiss Enigma machines carried the codename 'NEMA' and
had 4 coding rotors like the German Navy Enigmas. To further ensure the
safety of the coded messages, the 'ring settings' of the 4 rotors could be
externally set and the Reflector could also be externally set. Some of these
machines were stored in preparation for wartime and were never used. This is
a very fine, unused example of this complex and historic machine. The label
on top of the case shows that it was a military machine and warns that it is
only to be used in case of war. It carries serial number 465 on the case and
keys and internal parts.
It is complete and in working condition with the original spare parts. As you
can see, these parts are stored in the lid of the case. They include two
additional coding rotors or wheels designated: 'E' and 'F'. A power cord and
power adapter, and a set of spare light bulbs are also stored in the lid as is
the remote light panel which represents an improvement over the original
German Enigma and allows the decoded text to be read by an officer, out of
sight of the person typing in the coded letters. An original NEMA instruction
manual is also included.
The machine was originally designed to operate on many voltages and plugs and adapters are supplied to allow operation on 110-120 volts and 220-240 volts. It was originally designed so that it could also be powered by an internal 4- volt battery which is not available. However, the machine can be operated with two 1.5-volt flashlight batteries which help prolong the life of the 4- volt light bulbs.
